Advices for your internship in Paris
Before you pack your bags and get off on your big adventure in Paris, here are five things you will need for your stay.
Walking shoes
There are so many free museums and parks in Paris, you could spend your entire time in the city walking! If you only have time for a few tourist stops, be sure to at least check out the following few places:
Musée Carnavalet is the perfect place to learn about Paris rich history, learn about the Renaissance in the sixteenth century, or Napoleon's conquests during the nineteenth century. Study Asian art at the Musée Cernuchi, or original manuscripts at the Maison de Victor Hugo. The Louvre, the Orsay and Quai Branley are also all free on the first Sunday of every month – but be prepared to share the space with thousands of people !
Swimming attire
Paris is not commonly known for its swimming pools, but they are everywhere ! Every arrondissement or district within the city has at least one public swimming pool. The entry costs only 3€ so they are well worth visiting if you're in the mood for a cheap and relaxing activity. Every pool is different, you have the choice of larger Olympic sized swimming pools to smaller more traditional Parisian pools, and some even offer extras such as gyms and solariums.
Camera
Paris is beautiful. From colonial architecture, to fashionable people, to the sprawling gardens, to the bright lights of the Eiffel Tower – everywhere you turn will look like something out of a postcard and you will want to take plenty of photographs documenting your time in this wonderful city.
French translation book
Parlez-vous Anglais ? A translation phrase book or a translator application on your mobile phone is a necessity if you do not speak French. Whilst most French people can speak English very well, they will often prefer to speak French either out of embarrassment of their English skills or because they are proud Frenchmen !
The French governmental department, Académie française, go so far to preserve the French language and prevent the adaptation of English words that they will create a new French word for every new English word created. So if you're a student intern it would be wise to brush up on a few basic French phrases before meeting your new employer !
Creativity
Paris is everything inspiring, exciting, romantic and interesting ! Expect your creativity to ignite and flow, do not be surprised if you find yourself sitting on a bench in the afternoons sketching café scenes, or if you suddenly begin writing short poems or stories inspired by the people all around you.
Whether you're on a business, or marketing, or design internship, embrace the energy of this city and you might find yourself to be a new Walt Whitman or Emily Dickinson !
