Carry photocopies of your passport and important documents

Pick pocketing is still a big problem in the city, especially around the tourist areas and busy shopping districts. Make sure you never carry your original documents or passport with you while you are out in the city and instead have photocopies of them available if any authorities wish to sight them.

Ensure you carry all of your possessions in a secure backpack or handbag that can be attached to you at all times. Make sure your bag is always closed tightly so no one can put their hands inside. And never leave your bag or any other possessions sitting loosely next to you on a seat or on the ground because someone will likely come along and grab it !

Pack a variety of clothing

Depending how long your internship will be in Barcelona, the weather varies a lot. Since it is located right on the Mediterranean Sea, Barcelona gets very hot summers and cold winters, so it is best you pack a mixture of clothing to suit all of the seasons. Clothing that can be matched and layered together work the best.

Walking shoes

Barcelona is a huge city and you will often find yourself lost in thought walking around the streets of the city since there is just so much to see all of the time ! Because the weather is also often warm, the locals are usually out and about in the city meeting friends for social events, hosting picnics in the parks or going for walks along the seaside. Whatever your interests, you will spend a lot of time walking so make sure you have comfortable shoes.

Sunscreen

Especially if you are going to be visiting during the summer months in July and August when it can be over 30°C every day. Barcelona may be in Europe, but don’t be fooled, it has a warm Mediterranean climate so a sunscreen rating of at least SPF 15+ is highly recommended !

Ear plugs

Back to our point about Barcelona being a big city – not only is it large, but the city is also compact and a lot of people live very close to each other. This organisation means that the city can be quite noisy in some parts, especially if you’re staying in the central and busy areas. The streets are often quite noisy until the early hours of the morning, with people socialising and staying out late for music and other events. So if you’re one of those people that really need their beauty sleep, then ear plugs are a must while you’re staying in the city !
